Lib Dem Actions on Water Security Violate UN SDG 6: A Chance for the Green Party to Reclaim Leadership on Water and Sewage Pollution

By Philip Greenwood – #GPC24

The Liberal Democrats are endangering water security in the South East through their councils, MPs, and leadership by opposing the South East Strategic Reservoir Option (SESRO). This vital infrastructure project, designed to secure sustainable water supply and protect rivers from over-abstraction, is being blocked in favor of NIMBYism. Their actions violate the UN's Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG 6), which prioritizes access to clean water and sustainable management.

For a party that claims to be an environmental leader, the Lib Dems’ opposition to SESRO reveals their contradictory and irresponsible approach to water security and sewage pollution. This gives the Green Party a perfect opportunity to distance itself from the Lib Dems and reclaim its leadership on these issues.

During the Green Party Conference (#GPC24), the time is now for the Greens to reassert their role as the party with the resolve to tackle water scarcity and pollution head-on. The Lib Dems, through their councils, MPs, and leadership, have proven willing to block essential projects while making empty environmental promises.

As an independent environmentalist who supports whichever party has the best policies on the environment, I urge the Green Party not to **share their leadership and voice with the Lib Dems, who will only funnel new Green voters toward their centrist, corporate-friendly agenda.

Don’t give away your ace cards.
